Images show damage to Lebanon’s capital after Israeli attacks

Columns of smoke rose and buildings were damaged this Tuesday (3), after Israel carried out attacks for the second consecutive day in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Israeli troops were driving towards Lebanon, a Lebanese official told Reuters on Tuesday.

Witnesses said the Lebanese Army retreated from at least seven forward positions along the border.

On Monday (March 2), Israel launched attacks on the Hezbollah-controlled and other areas of Lebanon in response to the group’s opening fire on Israel to avenge the death of Iran’s supreme leader.

The escalation has widened the conflict that has spread across the Middle East since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday (28 February), triggering Iranian retaliatory attacks across the region.

Hezbollah, a Shiite group founded by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in 1982, said its offensive was to avenge “pure blood” of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian supreme leader killed on Saturday, and “in defense of Lebanon”.

It was Hezbollah’s first attack since the 2024 war, despite almost daily Israeli bombings against the group.
