Paulo Rangel, Minister of Foreign Affairs
Paulo Rangel says that Portugal gave conditional authorization to the USA – and there is no involvement in the attack on Iran.
Os USA did not use the Lajes Base no, assures Paulo Rangel, which leaves Portugal of fora of last Saturday’s military movements.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs explained that the authorization given to the USA was “conditional”.
“One thing is what happened until Friday, before the attack began. All authorizations were given under the terms, not of the agreement itself, but of the general regime.”
At issue is a decree that “provides that all overflights and landings of state flights – in this case, military flights in Portugal – from any country require authorization”.
The USA, on the other hand, is one of the countries that has a permanent annual authorization.
The minister guarantees that there was no request for any military intervention on the day of the attack. The authorizations given were “tacit” and are not directly related “to the agreement”.
“We also have a communication from the United States saying that it had carried out military intervention and, therefore, we went to the regime integral of the agreement”, described Rangel.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs denied that the United States is “placing and disposing” of the Lajes Base.
“The United States has a treated which has existed for a long time and is perfectly regulated. AND fulfill it rigorously”, reinforced.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs assured: “Portugal will not be involved in this conflict. There was no intervention” in Lajesin Saturday’s attacks.
“There was no means that, from the Azores, was used in any attack until then. Portugal was not included in any offensive action”, he repeated.
