US senators fear endless war after confidential meeting on Iran

The senators left a closed-door meeting with representatives of the White House on Iran with very different expectations about the duration of the conflict.

Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama said the administration, including the , has presented a timeline for U.S. involvement in the conflict to conclude in three to five weeks — echoing some of the president’s own public comments.

But several other senators, including Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, said they believe the White House has not communicated a possible end date.

“It seemed very vague to me,” Hawley said, a comment that revealed some hesitation on the part of the anti-interventionist senator. He said he would likely not support the deployment of ground troops and would closely monitor what he called a “rapidly changing” operation.

“The military has accomplished a lot. So considering the successes they’ve had and the amount of accomplishments they’ve achieved, I’m hoping for a quick conclusion,” Hawley said.

Several Democrats were furious at what they saw as the White House’s refusal to present one.

“I think now I’m even more convinced that this is going to be an open-ended thing and forever,” a visibly emotional Senator Chris Murphy told reporters.

Senator Tim Kaine summed up the situation another way. Asked how long it would take for the operation to complete, he said: “It won’t be quick.”

“A lot of different goals have been discussed, but in terms of a clear goal, I think it’s all still very nebulous,” Kaine said.
