First lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, known as Janja, revealed that she had suffered harassment twice during her tenure in office. She also points out that the situation is “unbearable” for women. The statements were made in a conversation on the program Sem Censura, on TV Brasil, this Tuesday (3).

“It’s unbearable for us women. We don’t have any security, anywhere. I, as first lady, don’t have security anywhere I am. I have already been harassed twice during this period.. I, being First Lady, being in places that I think are safe for me and, even so, I was harassed. If I, as First Lady, who have a whole team around me, a look, cameras, care, am harassed, imagine a woman at the bus stop at ten o’clock at night”, she reported.

Janja cited a recent case that occurred with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The leader was walking in the historic center of the Mexican capital when several people approached to greet her and, without her realizing it, a man approached from behind.

Videos that recorded the moment — widely shared on social media — show the man hugging her by her right shoulder, holding her around the waist and trying to kiss her on the cheek, until he was pulled away by a security guard.

When mentioning the possible solutions to women’s insecurity, Janja states that there are many paths to be taken, and that they need to go in parallel.

“We have to work on the issue of legislation, punishment in the penal code, education, working at home. We will only be able to reach a society in which we feel safe when these paths meet up front. They are at odds today”, he explains.

Finally, Janja defends tougher punishments for violence against women.

“When we talk about punishment, it’s because today a man kills a woman, delivers the body to the police station and leaves through the front door. We have to be very tough on this issue. When we look at a man and say ‘it’s your responsibility, you have to talk about it’, it’s because it’s you who kill us. It’s the men who kill us”, concluded the first lady.
