A torpedo fired by a US submarine has sunk an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, in an action that marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
The attack took place in the Indian Ocean and led Sri Lankan authorities to confirm dozens of deaths and more than a hundred missing. The vessel was returning from a port in India when it was hit.
In Washington, the Secretary of Defense of the United States, Pete Hegseth, classified the episode as a military victory, highlighting that it was the first sinking of an enemy ship by a North American torpedo since the Second World War.
According to Hegseth, the target was an Iranian warship called “Soleimani”, named in honor of General Qasem Soleimani, killed in 2020 in an attack ordered during Donald Trump’s presidency.
While the United States highlights the strategic scope of the operation, Sri Lankan authorities focus on searches and supporting victims, in a situation that expands not only the geographic dimension of the conflict but also the level of military intensity involved.
This Iranian warship thought it was safe in international waters. It wasn’t.
The is fighting to win. 🇺🇸
