The president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), stated this Wednesday (4) that the Public Security PEC will go straight to a vote, without the provision that provided for a referendum on reducing the age of criminal responsibility.
The decision came after an agreement reached with the government, creator of the original text, which did not include a reduction in the age of criminal responsibility. On the other hand, the rest of the proposal will not need to be voted on by a special committee before going to the plenary.
The PEC rapporteur, deputy Mendonça Filho (União-PE), gave in and accepted the removal of the section included in his report. Heard by g1Mendonça admitted that he agreed to the change after Motta convinced him that the entire text could be rejected in the Senate because of the controversial provision.
Mendonça’s proposal called for a referendum to be held in 2028 so that the population could decide whether or not to approve the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility to 16 years for specific types of crime.
Although it is an old debate in Brazil, the topic gained new momentum after the national commotion surrounding the death of the dog Orelha, who, according to initial reports, had been beaten to death by a group of teenagers.
