20 camels were disqualified from the 2026 Camel Beauty Festival in Oman after signs of prohibited aesthetic procedures were detected. Yes, there are beauty contests for camels…

The organizers of the 2026 Camel Beauty Festival in Al Musanaa, Oman, disqualified 20 camels after veterinary inspections detected aesthetic improvements, including botox, dermal fillers, silicone remodeling and even the so-called “bump inflation”.

The disqualifications underscore growing concerns about animal welfare and competitive integrity in high-profile camel beauty pageants across the Gulf region. Far from being mere spectacles, these festivals are important cultural and economic events, where prize money, prestige and reproduction value are closely linked. A winning camel can have its market value significantly increased, in addition to raise the owner’s reputation in influential creator circles.

Organizers in Oman said routine veterinary examinations had identified signs of tampering with the aim of exaggerating desirable physical characteristics.

Similar controversies have arisen at the highly regarded King Abdulaziz Camel Festival in Saudi Arabia, where dozens of camels have been banned from participating in recent years due to allegations of aesthetic manipulation that affected lips, noses, heads and other characteristics. In 2021, the Saudi Press Agency reported that festival authorities were committed to stopping “all acts of adulteration and deceit in the beautification of camels” and promised severe penalties for offenders.

Veterinary experts warn that such procedures could represent serious health risks. Injectables like fillers can cause inflammation or infection, while silicone implants can shift within the tissue and lead to complications. Botox, which works by temporarily paralyzing muscles, can interfere with essential activities such as chewing and drinking if administered incorrectly.

Beauty standards in these contests often emphasize features such as large lips, long necks, well-defined bosses and symmetrical facial structure. Judges evaluate camels based on strict criteria, and even small physical variations can influence the classification, which encourages owners to look for improvements despite prohibitions.

As prizes increase and social media attention intensifies, authorities across the region have increased surveillance measures, including advanced scanning technologies and extended veterinary teams.
