Protest against Russia’s participation in the Venice Biennale is growing

The dispute over Russia’s participation in the 2026 Venice Biennale has turned into a political conflict. The trigger is the decision of the Biennale President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco to allow Russia to take part again. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, however, stated on behalf of the Italian government that he had not approved this and referred to the Italian cabinet’s negative attitude.
