The Canary Islands take to the streets in 8M due to the “need to resist”
Feminist organizations and groups will take to the streets of the Canary Islands today to demand progress towards equality on International Women’s Day and promote measures to combat sexist, vicarious, economic and institutional violence.
Today, the Feminist Network of Gran Canaria will focus on the “need to resist” those who want to “cut off women’s rights.” Under the motto “Feminists in resistance against the patriarchal offensive,” the mobilization calls for “fighting together and actively as a society” for the rights of all women in the face of attempts to set back issues such as education, health, and the fight against gender violence.
The march will start at 12 from the Plaza de San Telmo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and will end in the Plaza de Santa Ana, in Triana. Along the way, it will be denounced that feminist policies are not a priority of the State, nor is the fight against sexist violence.
The other great march of the islands will be held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife at the same time. It will start from the García Sanabria Park and will continue until it ends in the Plaza de la Candelaria. The organizations call on the entire society to “get involved” in the defense of women’s rights, in the face of the “rise of a new fascism” championed by the extreme right under the motto “Unstoppable Feminists, Let’s knock down fascism!” “Machismo kills and is killing us. It is the task of the entire society to stop it.” Marches will also be held on islands such as Lanzarote, Fuerteventura or La Palma.
