Iran has a new supreme leader. This was decided by Sunday’s (March 8) special session of the Assembly of Experts, exactly one week after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes.
Iran’s Assembly of Experts on Sunday elected the country’s new supreme leader and successor to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died last weekend during Israeli-American attacks. However, his name has not yet been released. The AFP agency drew attention to this with reference to the members of this body, reports TASR.

Election of a new leader
“The most suitable candidate has been decided and approved by the majority of the Assembly of Experts,” confirmed one of its members representing Khuzistan province, Iran’s ISNA news agency reported.
Another member of the body said in a video published by Iran’s Fars news agency that the Assembly “reached a firm position reflecting the opinion of the majority.”
The Assembly of Experts has 88 members and is one of the most important bodies of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is a body of clergy that has the power to elect and dismiss the supreme leader.
Possible successors and Israel’s warning
The name of Mojtab Khamenei, who is the second-born son of the slain Ayatollah Khamenei, was also mentioned among the hot candidates for the post of the new leader.
The BBC reported on Sunday that the Israeli military on Platform X warned Iran that it would continue to persecute any successor to Khamenei. She thus repeated the statements of Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, who declared on Wednesday that “any leader appointed by the Iranian terrorist regime will be a definite target for elimination.”
