Palmeiras reached their 27th Campeonato Paulista title this Sunday (8), beating Novorizontino in the decision.
Abel Ferreira’s team is the second biggest winner of the state, behind Corinthians, with 31 cups.
Next come São Paulo and Santos, with 22 victories each.
The Campeonato Paulista, the country’s first state football tournament, has been played without interruption since 1902.
In December 1901, five clubs from the capital — Sport Club Internacional, Club Athletico Paulistano, Sport Club Germânia, Associação Athletica Mackenzie College and São Paulo Athletic Club, whose captain was Charles Miller — founded the Liga Paulista de Foot-ball, an entity that would organize, the following year, the inaugural edition of the championship.
In 1912, differences between the clubs led to the creation of the São Paulo Athletic Sports Association. In the following years, each of the leagues organized their own competition, until the closure of the Liga Paulista de Foot-ball in 1917.
In 1925, a new split was at the root of the creation of the Amateur Football League, which promoted its championship between 1926 and 1929.
The tournament was unified in the 1930s, with the founding of the Liga Paulista de Futebol, the embryo of the current FPF (Federação Paulista de Futebol), which has organized the state competition since 1941.
