Bedbugs are returning to apartments more and more often, especially in large cities and places frequently visited by tourists. Importantly, their presence can be noticed faster than you think.
One of the less obvious symptoms of the presence of bedbugs is a specific smell. People who notice it describe it as sweet, slightly almond-like or reminiscent of a damp wardrobe or old wood. This odor is caused by chemicals pheromonesthat bedbugs secrete. They are used by insects to communicate and warn each other. When there are more of them in one place, the aroma may become clearly noticeable. However, it is worth remembering that not everyone is able to recognize it. Therefore, the smell should be treated as an indicator rather than the only evidence of the presence of insects.

Bedbugs prefer places close to humans because they feed on blood during sleep. For this reason, they most often appear in a radius about 1-2 meters from the bed. The most common hiding places include:
- mattress seams,
- gaps in the bed frame,
- screw holes and furniture joints,
- the back of the headrest,
- skirting boards,
- gaps in the floor or walls.
Checking these areas regularly will help you detect the problem more quickly.
There is something beyond smell some characteristic signswhich may indicate the presence of these insects. The most common ones appear:
- tiny black dots – these are bedbug excrements,
- small spots of blood on the bedding,
- light, thin “scales” left after molting,
- bites on the skin, often arranged in a line or small cluster.
We most often notice such symptoms in the morning, after waking up.

Although their occurrence cannot be completely ruled out, some simple habits can significantly reduce the risk. It is worth remembering:
- washing clothes after returning from a trip,
- carefully checking used furniture before bringing it home,
- avoiding putting suitcases on the bed,
- using protective mattress covers.
When dealing with bedbugs, vigilance is key. The sooner we notice the first signals, the easier it is to stop the problem before it spreads throughout the apartment.
