Putin and Trump hold a telephone conversation about conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East

Putin’s diplomatic advisor, Yuri Ushakov, indicated that the Russian President advocated a “quick political and diplomatic solution to the Iranian conflict”given that Tehran is a close ally of Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his North American counterpart Donald Trump held a “frank and constructive” telephone conversation this Monday, the Kremlin announced, in which the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine were discussed.

“The focus was on the situation surrounding the conflict with Iran and the ongoing bilateral negotiations, with the participation of representatives of the United States, to resolve the Ukrainian issue”, reported Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s diplomatic advisor, cited by Russian news agencies.

According to Ushakov, the phone call, which lasted about an hour – the first between the two leaders since December 2025 – was held at the initiative of Washington to “discuss a series of extremely important issues related to current developments in the international situation“.

“Serious, frank and constructive” conversation

The Kremlin advisor described the conversation as “serious, frank and constructive”without revealing the exact content of the discussions.

Ushakov indicated that the Russian President advocated a “quick political and diplomatic solution to the Iranian conflict”given that Tehran is a close ally of Moscow.

Regarding Ukraine, Vladimir Putin provided his American counterpart with “a description of the current situation on the contact linewhere Russian troops are advancing with considerable success”, he continued.

The advisor also said that the Russian leader “positively assessed the mediation efforts undertaken” by Donald Trump to try to find a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukrainealaunched by Moscow in February 2022, after several rounds of negotiations that have so far failed to lead to a ceasefire.

The United States and Israel have launched bombings in Iran since February 28, which interrupting ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, centered on Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran has restricted maritime oil tanker traffic

In response, the Iran has restricted maritime oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and launched air strikes against Israel and several Middle Eastern countries that host US military installations, escalating the conflict to a regional dimension.

Iran is a partner of Moscow and one of the few countries that provided weapons to Russian forces in their invasion of Ukrainemainly through the transfer of Shahed drones and their production technology, which have been lashing the Ukrainian territory.

The same Drones have been used by Tehran to attack US bases in the Middle East since the beginning of the current conflict in the region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this Monday that the round of peace negotiationsscheduled for this week with Russia and the United States, was postponed due to the military escalation in the Middle East.
