We put our heads in it every night and trust that it is clean. But the pillow hides more than just a soft filling. Dust mites, sweat and skin residue make it a place that needs regular care. But how to do it so that it really makes sense?
The pillow is one of the most stressed parts of the bedroom. During sleep, sweat soaks into it, it captures hair products and dust from the surroundings. And even if you honestly change the coating several times a month, its filling itself often goes unnoticed. And that’s where the problem may lie.
A clean pillow is not the only condition for quality sleep. Choosing a bed and a suitable mattress is an equally important step to take when planning your bedroom:
What’s hiding inside the pillow?
doing really well in bed. They are comfortable with warmth, humidity and plenty of food in the form of dead skin cells. One pillow can therefore contain up to millions of these microscopic creatures, and their allergens subsequently irritate the respiratory tract. And simply washing the coating is not enough, because most of the dirt remains trapped inside the filling.
In addition to mites, there is also sweat and sebum. These gradually soak into the material during use and cause odors and yellowing. And even with regular washing, the filling breaks down over time and loses its shape. The pillow is not only not very hygienic, but it stops providing the right support.
Experts therefore recommend changing the pillow, depending on the type of filling, about once every one to three years. If it remains folded when folded and does not return to its original shape, this is a clear signal to replace it. Loss of flexibility thus means loss of support and a higher risk of allergen accumulation.
How to extend the life of pillows
It is the basis protective zipper coverwhich acts as a barrier between the filling and the surroundings. It can be washed more often and will catch most of the dirt before it can penetrate inside. The sleeping cover should be changed at least once a week, if you sweat a lot more often.
Modern materials with a dense fiber structure that prevent the penetration of mites can also help. It is also important to regularly ventilate the bedroom and keep the humidity low. A dry and bright environment is not good for mites, while heat and humidity are good for them.
Mrs. Žaneta Johnová from Kořenov has her own proven ritual. “I wash the pillows regularly, and once they’re nice, I air them outside for fresh air. A combination of washing and airing works best for me,” she says. According to her, you can tell the difference not only in the smell, but also in the quality of your sleep.
A clean pillow as the basis of healthy sleep
A pillow is not eternal and deserves more care than just a clean cover. Regular washing, protective packaging and occasional fresh air ventilation will help reduce mites and unpleasant odors. When you give your pillow the attention it undoubtedly deserves, you’ll be rewarded with a more restful night’s sleep and an allergy- and neck-pain-free morning.
