Most injuries during earthquakes occur during panic movements. If you are caught by an earthquake outside the building, you must stay outside. If a person is inside, they should not leave the building. This follows from the information published by the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic in the guide What to do in the event of a crisis or armed conflict.
In a building, you can protect yourself from an earthquake by taking shelter near a retaining wall or under a door frame. On the other hand, standing by the window can be dangerous. A table can also provide shelter, and you can also hide under the nearest durable object. Stairs and elevators should also be avoided.
“Stay outside as far as possible from power lines, trees, monuments, etc. Do not stay in narrow streets, if necessary seek protection under the nearest gate.” advises the Department of the Interior in the manual.
When driving in a vehicle, stop in an open area, do not get out and wait for the shocks to pass. Handling an open fire can be dangerous during an earthquake. There is a risk of leakage and subsequent gas explosion and fire. “Make sure your loved ones and neighbors have all the information and get them the help they need, while keeping your own safety in mind,” added the ministry.
