Government prepares changes to rental law to make evictions faster

The Government wants to make evictions faster and free up houses for new rental. The change in the tenancy law will be approved this Thursday by the Council of Ministers. The Lisbon Tenants Association says that the number of cases to which this measure applies is residual.

O had already opened the door to changes in the tenancy law in September last year. The announced shock program for housing began with tax incentives and construction regimes, leaving new developments until 2026, with the minister announcing this in December.

Miguel Pinto Luz anticipated a change to facilitate evictions. It guaranteed that the emergency housing fund would continue to protect those who are unable to fulfill contracts, for example, due to unemployment or economic and social incapacity and that the measure was aimed at repeated defaulters and from the point of view of speeding up the judicial process.

The Lisbon Tenants Association regrets not being heard by the Government. Both sides of the contract ask for balance in measures for renters and owners.

The Government wants to count on the thousands of homes that are currently off the market.

In 2023, one of the most criticized measures of the so-called ‘More Housing’ was the proposal to force the leasing of vacant properties.

From one year without occupation to two, it ended up being softened by the PS and approved by the majority. Bloco de Esquerda and PCP abstained, IL and PSD voted against.
