President of France classified the action as ‘unacceptable’; a soldier was killed in an attack in the Iraqi region of Erbil
In yet another indication that the conflict continues to spread, the war in the Middle East has claimed its first casualty among the ranks of France, a country with troops in the region, but which is not participating in the bombing campaign against Iran. French President Emmanuel Macron announced this Thursday (12) that a soldier was killed in an attack in the Iraqi region of Erbil.
Without claiming responsibility for the attack, the pro-Iran Iraqi armed group, Ashab al-Kahf, announced that, from then on, it would attack “all French interests” in the region due to the deployment of the aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Macron condemned an attack on French troops in Iraq and said the action was “unacceptable”. According to Macron, Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion, from the 7th Battalion of Alpine Hunters of Varces, died during an attack in the Erbil region.
The French president reported that other soldiers were injured and reiterated the government’s support for the victims and their families. “The war in Iran cannot serve as a justification for attacks against French soldiers,” said Macron in a publication on X.
The French leader highlighted that the country’s forces have been in Iraq since 2015 fighting the Islamic State and stated that this presence occurs strictly within the mission to fight terrorism.
