CBF changes team nomination criteria for the 2027 Copa do Brasil

Entity now authorizes the use of selective tournaments and state cups to distribute places in the national competition

The Brazilian Football Confederation established the criteria for distributing places for the 2027 and 2028 Brazilian Cup. The CBF will give all state federations the possibility of nominating at least one club through state tournaments or cups.

The information was disclosed in a letter sent to the federations and obtained by Globo Esporte. According to the statement, the change in criteria contributes to the democratization of Brazilian football.

The change should mainly affect small federations, which are entitled to only three places in the championship. For next year, entities will be able to allocate one of them to selective tournaments. In 2026, these vacancies came exclusively from state championships. All of these federations already had more than three places in the competition.

The new guidelines are likely to generate controversy among smaller clubs. Teams that claim third place due to their performance in this year’s state championship may end up being left out of the competition.
