Moraes threatens protection of journalistic sources – 03/14/2026 – Elio Gaspari

The minister is experienced. He determined one against the Maranhão journalist Luís Pablo Conceição Almeida. The minister authorized the seizure of cell phones, computers, tablets, documents and other electronic devices that could assist in a confidential investigation.

Investigation of what? Of possible misuse of an official car by the minister. It’s combined like this.

Former prosecutor and former Secretary of Security of São Paulo, Moraes may be attacking the right of all journalists to preserve the identity of their sources. In this equipment, almost all journalists keep documents, transcripts of conversations and even clues for possible reports. These are collections that, in some cases, store more information than a month’s worth of wiretaps.

At first glance, the case involves a journalist from Maranhão, who wrote against Flávio Dino, his colleague from Supremo. It would be a negligible case.

At second glance, even if this was not his intention, he attacked the exercise of the profession of all journalists. Aware of advances in technology, Moraes even wants to seize data stored in cloud storage services.

Moraes creates a precedent: he searches Luís Pablo Conceição Almeida’s equipment for the story of an official car that would have been used by Flávio Dino. The aim of this shot can go further.
