SkyDefender is a layered “system of systems”
It does not have the same scale as the North American Golden Dome, with a protection range of just 5,000 km, and is intended to protect regions rather than continents. But unlike Donald Trump’s Golden Dome, which has yet to make it to paper, SkyDefender is now available — and has been combat-tested.
French multinational Thales, which doesn’t want to let Americans monopolize all the “Star Wars” fun, presented its answer to the US Golden Dome.
As the company announced on Wednesday, in , the system SkyDefender It is already operational and is designed to protect entire regions against air and missile attacks.
Announced in January 2025, the program is an updated version of the Cold War’s Strategic Defense Initiative. Inspired, in conceptual terms, by , its objective is to defend the United States from air and missile attacks through a layered system of sensors and interceptors capable of covering the entire North American continental territory.

Formally launched on March 11, 2026, SkyDefender is based on systems already developed and, according to Thales, tested in combat. It does not have the same scale as the Golden Dome, with a protection range of just 5,000 kmhair that is intended for protect regions and not continents — although the principle is similar to its North American equivalent.
SkyDefender works as a modular layered defense networkoperated with the help of AI. In essence, It is a “system of systems”and not from a single weapons platform.
Its main mission is defend against tactical ballistic missileshypersonic missiles and cruise missiles, while facing lower-level threats such as drones.
The top layer of SkyDefender is a long range detection network linked to Thales Alenia Space geostationary satellites, which monitor infrared signatures associated with missile launches.
A mid-range detection operates up to approximately 150 km using the Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain New Generation (SAMP/T NG) system, in conjunction with the Ground Fire radar, to detect approaching threats and launch Aster 30 B1 NT missiles for interception.
At shorter distances, the layer ForceShield short and very short range air defense (SHORAD / VSHORAD) combats threats at low altitudelike drones.
In parallel with these detection and interception layers, the system can also integrate Martlet laser-guided missiles, Mistral 3 missiles with fire-and-forget infrared guidance, and the 40 mm RapidFire CTA cannon. These assets provide rapid response options against a variety of hostile targets.
SkyDefender distinguishes itself from Golden Dome not just because of the scalebut also by operational concept. While Golden Dome aims to intercept threats like ICBMs and hypersonic missiles in space, SkyDefender’s top layer works mainly as an early warning system.
Another important difference is the degree of maturity of the two projects: the Golden Dome remains largely conceptual, while Thales guarantees that the SkyDefender is now available and can be scaled according to the specific needs of each client.
Furthermore, the SkyView command and control platform allows interoperability with the defense networks of NATO and allied countries.
