A 2026 edition of Finalíssimaa duel that would put them face to face Spain and Argentina, was canceled. The announcement was made this Sunday by UEFA after a series of unsuccessful attempts to make the game viableinitially scheduled for Qatar.

O confrontation would bring together the 2024 continental champions. On one side, Spain, winner of the European Championship. On the other, Argentina, champion of the Copa América. The duel was scheduled for March 27th, in Dohamass war in the Middle East made it impossible the event in the country and opened a debate about a new location for the dispute.

From then on, negotiations began to involve divergences between the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)in addition to UEFA itself, which looked for alternatives to keep the dispute on the calendar.

“It is a great disappointment that external circumstances prevented these teams from competing for such a prestigious trophy in a country that has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to host major international events,” UEFA said.

One of the proposals was transfer the game to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadiumin Madrid, on the same date, with equal division of tickets between fans of both teams. The idea was supported by Real Madrid, owner of the stadium, but ended up being rejected by the AFA.

Another possibility discussed was to hold the Final in two games. The first would be played in the Spanish capital in March, while the second would take place in Buenos Aires on a future FIFA date, before the 2028 editions of the Eurocup and Copa América. The alternative also did not advance.

A UEFA also sought to confirm the possibility of holding the match on a neutral ground in Europe, either on March 27th or three days later, on the 30th. The Argentine federation, however, did not accept the proposal. As a counterpoint, he suggested that the duel be played after the World Cup, but Spain informed that there were no available dates on the calendar.

Created from the partnership between Uefa and Conmebol, the Finalissima brings together the champions of Europe and South America in a commemorative match between the two confederations. The first edition was played in 2022, when Argentina beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium, in London.
