Brazilian Adolpho Veloso lost this Sunday (15), o Oscar for “Best Cinematography”. The statuette went to “Sinners”. This is the first time that a Brazilian has been nominatedthe. Brazil was also nominated for the film “The Secret Agent”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring Wagner Moura, in the categories “Best Film”, “Best Cast”, “Best Actor” and “Best International Film”.
Born in São Paulo and currently living in Lisbon, a career which crossed the country’s borders and places him among the Brazilian names highlighted in international cinema.
His first works in Brazil include productions such as Rodantes (2021), El Perfecto David and Mosquito (2020). From then on, he began to integrate foreign projectssuch as the historical series Becoming Elizabeth (2022) and the short American Cancer Story (2024).
The projection in Hollywood came as the winning film, adaptation of the book by Denis Johnson available on Netflix. The film follows Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), a lumberjack involved in the expansion of railroads in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, and explores extremely sensitive themes such as isolation, loss, love and the effects of progress on human life.
In the film, Veloso’s photography gained prominence by focusing on poetic and melancholic tones, enhancing the relationship between the character and the plot’s landscapes.
O Brazilian caught the attention of director Clint Bentley after his work on the documentary Yoga: Architecture of Peace (2017), by Heitor Dhalia. The partnership first resulted in Jockey (2021) and, later, in Sonhos de Trem.
With new projects already confirmed, he will be responsible for the photography direction of Remain, the next film by M. Night Shyamalan, director of The Sixth Sense and The Village, reinforcing his place among the main professionals in the field in world cinema.
