Óscar escaped from the hands of Timothée Chalamet: was it because of his words?

Humor marked the start of the 98th Oscar ceremonywith host Conan O’Brien taking the stage and opening the night with a monologue full of irony and references to the Hollywood universe.

Already the American presenter began by releasing a series of jokes aimed at some of the most well-known figures in the film industry, in a typical style of the biting humor that has marked his presentations.

“Security is extremely tight tonight. I have been informed that there is concern about possible attacks by the opera and ballet communities,” joked O’Brien, as the artist laughed in the audience.

Chalamet was considered one of the main candidates for the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in ‘Marty Supreme’. However, the statuette ended up going to Michael B. Jordan, who starred ‘Sinners’.

How could Oscar have slipped out of his hands?

The French-American actor may have seen the opportunity to win the much-desired golden statuette slip away, in part due to controversial statements he made in the weeks leading up to the ceremony. But the story deserves to be told calmly.

On February 24, in a conversation with Matthew McConaughey for the magazine VarietyTimothée Chalamet minimized the relevance of opera and balletgenerating an immediate wave of criticism.

I don’t want to work in ballet or opera, things that need people to say ‘hey, keep this alive’, even if no one already cares about it“, he said, in an observation that generated a strong negative reaction.

Quickly realizing the impact of his words, the 30-year-old actor tried to correct himself, ensuring he had “all respect” for professionals in those two areas. Even so, he admitted wryly that he might have just lost part of his audience.

Among those who spoke out against the comments was actress and Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis, who did not hesitate to add her voice to the chorus of objections to the young actor’s statements.

The impact of words

But did these words really impact the Best Actor Oscar winner?

Although there are always favorites in every category, the truth is that nothing is guaranteed until the night the golden statuettes are awarded.

However, the final outcome reinforced the theory that Timothée Chalamet’s controversial statements may have played a role in choosing the winner.

The suspicion gains strength when one remembers that votes by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences more than a week after the actor’s controversial statements ‘Marty Supreme’.
