“It's very cheap to live here”: Briton moved to a tourist destination 1 hour from Portugal and was 'surrendered' to the cheap cost of living and quality of life

Famous for its golden sandy beaches, clear waters and vibrant nightlife, Benidorm continues to establish itself as one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. Located on the east coast of Spain, this city is about an hour’s flight from Portugal or approximately eight hours by car, particularly popular with British tourists thanks to its sunny climate, short flights and prices that many consider surprisingly affordable.

A 24-year-old British man decided to move to Benidorm and was surprised by some of the differences to the UK. Harry Poulton, born in Brighton, regularly shares his experiences in the Spanish city on social media.

With more than 48 thousand followers on TikTok, where he posts tips and curiosities about the destination, Harry revealed that the cost of living there can be much lower. According to him, he spends less in a week in Benidorm than he would in his hometown, says the British newspaper.

‘Reduced’ cost of food and drink

The young man mainly highlighted the prices of food and drink. According to him, some meals may cost much less than those charged in the United Kingdom. “An English breakfast can cost as little as £2.50. And a pint of beer? Around 87 pence, the equivalent of one euro,” he said. He also explained that a week’s stay could be cheaper than staying at home in the UK.

Atmosphere also praised

Although the financial issue is one of the factors that draws the most attention, Harry highlighted that the city’s environment is another aspect that impressed him.

As described, cited by the same source, the festive atmosphere is constant and difficult to find in other tourist destinations. “There are people dressed up all year round as if it were Halloween. There are foam parties, bingo-raves… all happening at the same time. You never know what will appear in front of you”, he reported.

Characters that mark destiny

The relaxed atmosphere also favors curious encounters between tourists and residents. Harry said he has encountered several visitors who return to the destination repeatedly over the years. Among the examples he shared are tourists who have been visiting Benidorm up to 15 times a year for several decades. There are also those who show attachment to their destination through tattoos with the name of the city.

“They are some of the coolest, funniest, most joyful people you will meet. Everyone seems to have fun here.”, he said, quoted by The Mirror.
