Total blackout: power grid collapses in Cuba and leaves more than 10 million without electricity

It is the sixth time that the island has been without access to the network, but this new blackout occurs at a time of reinforced blockade in the United States

Cuba’s electrical grid has suffered a collapse, the national operator announced.

According to the Reuters agency, more than 10 million people are now without access to electricity, at a time when the United States blockade prevents the country from accessing the oil that previously reached it via Venezuela, which ended up being a serious blow to an already fragile system.

According to El País, the country was left “from end to end”, without electricity. Unión Elétrica, which manages the country’s electrical operation, confirmed that the National Electric Energy System (SEN) suffered a “total disconnection”.

Despite the confirmation, there are no further details about the causes of the blackout or how long it will take to resolve the situation.

This is the sixth total blackout in the last year and a half, in a country that has had many difficulties in ensuring the continuity of electrical operations.

Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines only said that “protocols for the reestablishment of the system” have been activated, although it is not known how long it may take.

The Cuban electrical system works with several energy generation islands, but reconnecting the entire network is a complex process that can, at the limit, take several days to complete.
