Marco Rubio: “The latest economic reforms in Cuba are not enough”

The economic reforms announced by the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, through which Cuban Americans will be able to invest in businesses on the island, “are not enough,” said the Secretary of State, this Tuesday. The former senator, son of Cuban emigrants, has also stressed his Administration’s determination to achieve regime change in Cuba.

“They have a political and governmental system that they cannot fix, the economy does not work, so they have to change drastically. What they announced on Monday is not drastic enough. It is not going to fix it. So they have to make important decisions about trade,” said the head of US diplomacy, who heads, on the part of his country, the contacts that his Administration develops with Havana. Rubio was speaking in the Oval Office during a meeting between President Donald Trump and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

“Their economy does not work. It is an economy that has survived. What they have is not even a revolution, what they have has survived thanks to subsidies from the Soviet Union and now from Venezuela, but they no longer receive those subsidies,” indicated the head of US diplomacy, who has reiterated his calls for a change of regime.

According to Rubio, in Cuba “they have a lot of problems, and the people in charge don’t know how to solve them, so there has to be other people in charge.”
