Hospitalized with bronchopneumonia, the former president, 70, showed improvement in both lungs, with no expected hospital discharge, but work is already underway on the possibility of him leaving the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) by the end of the week, according to cardiologist Brasil Caiado this Wednesday (18).
“Prudence dictates that we leave it there [na UTI] to be completely safe, observe the clinical picture, laboratory evolution, and improvement of symptoms. But I believe that it could be, from now on over the weekend, that we progress towards a transfer to the room. I don’t know exactly the moment”, he said in an interview with journalists at DF Star, in Brasília.
According to the doctor, Bolsonaro had a positive evolution after a third antibiotic was introduced into his treatment in the early hours of Sunday (15). A tomography carried out this Wednesday showed an improvement in the right lung, while the left lung continues to have “moderate impairment”.
“After this combination of the third antibiotic, the president began to show a response to the treatment. A drop in inflammatory markers, clinically, dyspineal breathing, which we call tachypineia, which is accelerated breathing, all symptoms gradually improved”, he declared.
The medical bulletin released at around 12:25 pm confirms that Bolsonaro presented a good clinical evolution, with partial improvement in tomographic aspects and a significant improvement in inflammatory markers. “It is planned to continue treatment with antibiotic therapy and continues with intensive clinical support and respiratory and motor physiotherapy”, says the statement.
Brasil Caiado stated that the medical team is monitoring a possible risk of fibrosis (stiffening and the formation of scars) in the former president’s lungs, which (13).
“Fibrosis is normally a more chronic condition, which limits the patient more in terms of physical performance, breathing and fatigue. It is a concern of ours that is on our radar, but we are working hard to ensure that this does not happen”, he declared.
The cardiologist stated that the former president has been hiccupping for about 24 hours and that a new medicine to treat this condition has also been adopted. Bacterial bronchopneumonia was caused by aspiration of vomit as a result of the hiccups he has had since .
Asked about the new situation on Tuesday (17), the cardiologist agreed with the argument defended by the lawyers to the minister, of the (Supreme Federal Court), that Papudinha’s transfer home would be better for Bolsonaro’s health.
“When we talk from a medical, technical point of view, a more welcoming environment, with more resources of appropriate, multidisciplinary professionals, physiotherapy, which he already does, but, if you also have a 24-hour nursing support team, more adequate nutrition, a visualization of any early changes, without a doubt, the family, residential environment, is much better”, he said.
Brasil Caiado also reported that Bolsonaro was “apprehensive” and “concerned” about the pneumonia, but is disciplined with the treatment, which includes physiotherapy. “He felt the weight of this infection a little more this time,” he declared.
