MacDill Air Force Base, located in Tampa, in the state of Florida, entered a “shelter-in-place” regime on the morning of this Wednesday, March 18, 2026, following an unspecified security threat.
According to base authorities, the alert began at 11:24 am (local time) and remained in effect until 2:08 pm. During this period, access was restricted and all personnel present were instructed to remain sheltered in safe locations whilst the situation was assessed.
MacDill is home to two of the United States’ main military commands: US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for operations in the Middle East, and US Special Operations Command (SOCOM), which coordinates special forces at a global level.
According to official data from the base itself, approximately 16,800 people work daily at MacDill, including approximately 7,600 military personnel and 8,100 civilians and contractors. The complex brings together more than 50 military units and organizations, in addition to a resident population of around 5,700 people.
The main unit installed at the site is the 6th Air Refueling Wing, responsible for in-flight refueling operations that support military missions in different regions of the world.
After verifying the threat, the base command reported that the confinement was suspended and that there is no active threat at the moment. No injuries or damage were reported, and activities resumed normally.
Authorities have not released additional details about the nature of the incident.
