The Philippines and North Korea secured their places in next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil after emerging victorious in the Asian Cup playoffs this Thursday (19).
Angela Beard and Jaclyn Sawicki scored just after half-time to seal a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan at Robina Stadium in the Gold Coast and guarantee the Philippines a place in their second successive World Cup.
At the same venue, Hong Song-Ok scored a hat-trick while Kim Kyong-yong also scored as North Korea thrashed three-time Asian Cup champions Taiwan 4-0 to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2011.
Uzbekistan and Taiwan can still qualify for the World Cup despite their losses, with both teams advancing to the intercontinental playoffs of the quadrennial tournament.
Japan face hosts Australia in the women’s Asian Cup final at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Saturday (21).
Japan and Australia, in addition to China and South Korea, were the first to guarantee their place in the World Cup through regional qualifiers. Brazil also has a guaranteed place as the host.
