It has never been so expensive: 254 euros per food basket. Government will wait

Two months ago, the same 63 products considered essential cost 12 euros less. Fiber cereals rose the most.

The rise in prices of fuels is affecting the price of food, as previously stated.

Transport becomes more expensive, fertilizers too – at a time of war in Iran, remember that the Gulf countries are some of the world’s largest producers and exporters of fertilizers; and many are blocked, on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Higher values in fuels, higher values in agriculture – and the food becomes more expensive.

DECO tracks the price of a food basket with 63 products considered essential. This week, this basket reached 254,32 euros, o highest price ever.

Reminds you that at the beginning of 2026, that is, just two months ago, the same basket cost 242 euros; a year ago it was around 237 euros (and in 2022, when this analysis began, it cost 176 euros; that’s a difference of 35%).

Over the last week, what rose the most in price were the fiber cereals (28% for 4.73 euros), followed by crustless bread (13% for 2.57 euros) and whole grain cereals (11% for 4.10 euros).

Compared to last year’s prices, the heart cabbage (45%), sea bass (36%) and roasted ground coffee (30%) were the products that rose the most.

For now, the Government will wait. The Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida, announced last week that there will be measures if the price rises last for more than 4 or 5 weeks. That’s when they turn into a “structural problem that may need state intervention.”
