Cuba rejects negotiating the position of president with the United States

Deputy Foreign Minister reacts to news about the US desire to remove current leader Miguel Díaz-Canel

The Cuban government refused this Friday (March 20, 2026) any negotiations regarding its political system or the mandate of President Miguel Díaz-Canel (Communist Party of Cuba, left) with the United States. The position was expressed by the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, during an interview with journalists. The information is from the news agency.

“I can categorically confirm that Cuba’s political system is not up for negotiation and, of course, neither the president nor the position of any authority in Cuba is subject to negotiation with the United States.”said the person responsible for the office of relations with the United States.

The Cuban vice minister’s statement comes in response to reports from North American vehicles, such as oeo which point to Washington’s intention to include the departure of the Cuban leader and changes to the island’s political system as part of an agreement.

Díaz-Canel, 65, has 2 years remaining in his term as president and 5 years as leader of the Communist Party.

Bilateral talks during economic crisis

Cuba recognized on March 13 that began talks with the United States government. The negotiations are taking place while an oil blockade imposed by US President Donald Trump (Republican Party) causes an energy crisis that paralyzes the island’s economy.

The situation worsened after the United States stopped oil supplies from Venezuela. The country was the island’s main supplier. The North American government also threatened to sanction other countries that sell fuel to Cuba, a measure that intensifies economic isolation.

The republican government classifies Cuba as a “exceptional threat”especially due to the island’s relations with Russia, China and Iran. Trump does not hide his interest in promoting regime change in the Caribbean country and has threatened to impose consequences if Havana does not agree to negotiate.
