Why the Iranian attack on the island in the Indian Ocean worries Europe

The recent launch of two Iranian ballistic missiles against the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean is worrying European authorities. The joint installation of the United States and the United Kingdom is approximately 4,000 kilometers from Iranian territory, a range that proves that Tehran’s arsenal now has the capacity to reach the main European capitals.

Until recently, under the leadership of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – killed in an attack on February 28 – it was believed that Iran had a limit of 2,000 kilometers to the range of its ballistic missiles. However, the attack carried out last Saturday against Diego Garcia showed that this limit no longer exists.

European capitals in the line of fire

The discovery of Iran’s new ballistic range comes as European nations seek at all costs to avoid direct involvement in the four-week-old war. The European Union was considering intervening just to help unblock the Strait of Hormuz, but always under the premise of a ceasefire.

The head of the Israeli military forces, Eyal Zamir, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, warning that the range of action of these new missiles puts cities such as Berlin, Paris and Rome under direct threat. International defense analysts warn that Iran is no longer a limited risk to the Middle East.

But there are those who try to calm things down. British Minister Steve confirmed that one of the missiles launched at Diego Garcia missed its target and the other was intercepted.

Earlier this month, Iran threatened to attack European countries that supported the United States and Israel in the war. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said that “if (any country) joins the United States and Israel in aggression against Iran, it will also become a legitimate target of Iranian retaliation.” The statement was made during an interview with France 24.
