New San Siro project advances with start of environmental assessment

Inter and Milan plan projects stadium for up to 71,500 people and urban area with park and commerce

The e Milan project for the requalification of the area in Milan (Italy) entered a new stage with the start of the VAS (Strategic Environmental Assessment). The procedure was opened by the local city hall, according to information published this Tuesday (24.mar.2026) on the specialized website Football and Finance.

VAS is a mandatory step that analyzes the environmental impacts of urban projects before final approval. The plan, called “GFU San Siro”, was presented by the company Stadio San Siro SpA, responsible for most of the areas involved.

The project estimates the construction of a new stadium with a capacity of 70,000 to 71,500 spectators, which will replace the current Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (San Siro). The proposal also includes the restructuring of part of the existing arena and the development of other urban functions.

The total area of the project is around 280,000 m², with approximately 98,000 m² allocated to buildings focused on services, commerce and complementary activities.

Among the main points of the plan is the creation of an urban park that will occupy around 50% of the area, with public spaces, squares and green areas. The project also estimates infrastructure interventions, such as the relocation of the Patroclo tunnel, an important road access in the region.

The environmental assessment will analyze impacts such as traffic, air quality, land use and water resources management. The process includes consultations with public bodies and environmental authorities.

After completion of the VAS, the project will proceed to the next stages of the administrative process until eventual final approval, necessary for the start of works.
