When a month of war in the Middle East is about to end, the Spaniards are not convinced by the arguments used by USA e Israel to attack the Iran and they are afraid of the consequences of the conflict, so the majority of citizens adopt a neutral position in the conflict. The position of the Spanish Government pleases, but the strategy of the ‘no to war‘ of Pedro Sanchez sparks greater division. They are the main conclusions of a ‘flash survey‘ prepared by the Gabinet d’Estudis Socials i Opinió Pública (GESOP) on March 11 and 12 from a panel of citizens. Below, we break down the nine questions of the survey.
61.8% of Spaniards disapprove of the military intervention of the United States and Israel against Irancompared to 22.4% who approve and 15.8% who do not take a position on the matter. By electorates, the voters of summer (85.8%) and PSOE (77.2%) are those who most reject the offensive, while 60.3% of the voters of Vox They are in favor. PP voters are very divided: 43% support the intervention and 42.7% are against it. By sex, rejection is greater among women (65.7%) than among men (57.2%); and by age, the opposition grows with age, although in the youngest group, from 18 to 29 years old, the high percentage of people who avoid taking a position stands out (35.1%).
More than half of Spaniards (53.1%) They do not align with any side of this war, while one in four positions themselves in favor of the USA and Israel (27.5%) and only two out of ten support Iran (19.3%). Perceptions change depending on the electorate: half of the PSOE and Sumar voters remain neutral, but among those who take a position there is more support for the ayatollah regime (40.6% in Sumar and 31.8% in the PSOE) than Donald Trump y Benjamin Netanyahu (19.1% in the PSOE and 8% in Sumar). On the other hand, support for the US and Israel climbs to 58% among PP and Vox voters. By sex and age, neutrality predominates in all cases.
Also, half of Spaniards, 49%, consider that the most appropriate position in this conflict is oppose war; 31% are in favor of maintain neutrality and 16.8% advocate support the USA. The rejection of the contest is the majority in all age groups and in both sexes, although much more pronounced among the women (56.9%) and over 60 years old (52.5%). 80% of Sumar voters and 63% of PSOE voters oppose the war, a percentage that falls to 12% among Vox voters. 52.2% of those who voted for Santiago Abascal They support Trump and 31.8% defend being neutral. The PP electorate is divided again: 35.3% support the US, 32% remain neutral and 31.6% oppose the war.
52% of Spaniards approve Government position on war compared to 32.7% who disapprove and 15.3% who do not take a position. Obviously, PSOE (75.6%) and Sumar (82%) voters are the most aligned with the government coalition, while rejection of the Executive reaches 59.8% among PP voters and 68% among Vox voters. Still, one in four voters Alberto Núñez Feijóo They support the Government’s position. Both by sex and age, support for Sánchez’s Cabinet is the majority in all cases.
Something different is the Sánchez’s leadership against the racewhich does not raise a clear consensus among citizens. 46% of Spaniards approve ‘no war’ strategy39% disapprove and 15% avoid taking a position. By age and sex, all the percentages are around the state average, but by voters the foreseeable differences are reflected: broad support for Sánchez among the voters of PSOE (76.5%) and Sumar (88.3%), and resounding rejection among those of PP (70.1%) and Vox (84.7%).
When asked about the opinion of the US president, there are very few differences. Three out of every four Spaniards (73.4%) disapprove of the Trump’s leadership in international politicswhich only 16% of those interviewed approve, and another 10.6% do not take a position. Only those who disagree with so much frontal rejection Vox voters: 41.6% support the American president and 37.1% censure him. In the PP electorate there is also clear opposition to Trump (56.9%), but 32.8% support him. One in four young people from 18 to 29 years old They also like Trump (25%).
Given the hypothesis of whether this conflict could end up triggering a world war threepractically half of Spaniards recognize this fear. 48.1% see a lot or quite a probability of a global scale contest and 48.2% see little or no chance. Among women and younger age groups (18 to 44 years old), fear exceeds 50%, unlike among men and older citizens (45 years and older). By party, a majority of PSOE and Sumar voters see a world war as possible, unlike what happens between those close to PP and Vox.
What the Spanish do have very clear is that, as has already been noted with gasoline, the war in the Middle East will cause a general increase in prices. 96.2% of those surveyed have this fear, compared to 3.2% who do not believe that this scenario will ever happen. The impression coincides in all social and ideological segments.
And thinking about the impact that the war can have on the electoral board, three out of every four Spaniards (66.8%) rule out change your vote in the next elections due to this conflict, while 28.8% could consider supporting another party. In all sexes, ages and ideologies there is a clear majority against changing the ballot, but those with the highest percentage of those inclined to change are the women (36,6%), los young people from 30 to 44 years old (36.4%) and the voters of the PP (39.4%) and Vox (37.9%).
