Brazil signs agreement with Türkiye to guarantee alternative route to the Strait of Hormuz

New document allows goods to cross Turkish territory or remain in temporary storage before heading to their final destination

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock negotiated the continuation of an alternative route via Türkiye for sending Brazilian agricultural exports. The measure, announced this Thursday (26), aims to circumvent transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz and guarantee the flow of goods to the Middle East and Central Asia without the need to pass through the Persian Gulf.

In a statement, the Ministry stated that the Turkish port structure was already used by national exporters, but the country started to require new sanitary rules for products of animal origin subject to veterinary control. To maintain traffic, the ministry established the Veterinary Health Certificate for Products Subject to Veterinary Controls in Direct Transit through the Republic of Türkiye or for Temporary Storage.

The new document allows goods to cross Turkish territory or remain in temporary storage before heading to their final destination. The measure especially covers items subject to official veterinary control that are destined for another country or ship.

According to the ministry, the negotiated solution provides security and predictability to Brazilian exporters in the face of instability on international routes. “Maintaining access via Türkiye reinforces the strategy to ensure the functioning of agricultural trade in scenarios of logistical restrictions,” he said.
