World Cup 2026: Jamaica and DR Congo fight for a place in Portugal's group

Jamaica defeated New Caledonia (1-0) and will face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final of the World Cup qualifiers, with a place in Portugal’s group up for grabs.

In the intercontinental play-off semi-finals in Guadalajara, western Mexico, on Thursday night, the Jamaica scored the only goal in the 18th minute, through Bailey Cadamarteri.

In the play-off final, Jamaica will face DRCongo, on Tuesday, with winner of that game to qualify for the World Cup and it will be Portugal’s first opponent not Group K, a June 17them Houston.

The Portuguese team will then face Uzbekistan, on June 23rd, again in Houston, and Colombia, on the 27th of the same month, in Miami.

‘Portuguese’ duo from Colombia did not prevent defeat

Colombia, the Portuguese team’s opponent in the World Cup, had Luís Suárez (Sporting) and Richard Ríos (Benfica) as startersbut still lost on Thursday night to Croatia (2-1), in a friendly game played in Orlando, Florida.

Os ‘cafeteros’ were winning Croatiawith an early goal from Jhon Arias, after two minutes, but they allowed the comeback. Still in the first part, the Croatians also equalized in the opening minutesat six, by Vuskovic, and they turned the score around through Matanovicafter a corner, at 42.

Suárez, like Benfica midfielder Richard Ríos, were starters in Colombia, both leaving in the 71st minute.
