The Algarve has once again stood out internationally and there is one detail that continues to surprise: a Portuguese beach that was once considered the best in the world and remains among the most valued by travelers. Even after this distinction has passed for some time, recognition continues to place the region at the top of preferences.
With more than 150 kilometers of coastline, the Algarve asserts itself as one of the most complete destinations in Europe, combining nature, accessibility and diversity of experiences. It is in this context that one of its beaches gained global recognition.
The beach that topped the world ranking
Falésia Beach, located between Albufeira and Vilamoura, was voted the best beach in the world by Tripadvisor in 2024, a distinction highlighted by America magazine, which specializes in travel, and which continues to be a reference for tourists.
“Portugal’s southernmost region, the Algarve, is dotted with fishing villages that have been transformed into characterful resort towns, with steep cliffs, hidden caves and dozens of stunning sandy beaches. So it’s no surprise that one of these dreamy coastal strips was recently named the best in the world by Tripadvisor as part of its annual Travelers’ Choice Awards,” says the Travel + Leisure post.
Despite new lists appearing every year, this distinction continues to be frequently cited and influence tourist demand.
A setting that combines dimension and landscape
According to the same source, the beach is distinguished by its natural surroundings and unusual size. “It is located between the cities of Albufeira and Vilamoura, in the central part of the Algarve coast, where tall pine trees are located on top of ocher cliffs that descend more than 40 meters to a vast expanse of golden sands washed by the blue waters of the Atlantic.”
About five kilometers long, Praia da Falésia allows for a more dispersed experience, even in times of greater crowds, something increasingly valued.
Furthermore, it maintains Blue Flag certification, which guarantees high standards of water quality, safety and environmental management.
What makes this beach different
The combination of sea, cliffs and panoramic trails is one of the factors most highlighted by visitors. “Sunbathe on the vast coastline, swim or body surf the waves, or stroll along the scenic cliff-top trail and soak up the incredible views,” recommends Tripadvisor.
This versatility allows the destination to be sought out by both those who want to rest and those looking for outdoor activities.
Travel+Leisure also highlights the diversity of experiences available in the surrounding area.
“While the beach is easily accessible by car or public transport from Albufeira, tourists can also enjoy it if they stay at one of the cliff-top resorts. Pine Cliffs, for example, is part of Mariott’s Luxury Collection and offers five-star amenities including a golf course and spectacular views of Praia da Falésia. One of the resort’s restaurants, Maré at Pine Cliffs, is directly on the beach and is a popular spot for lunch and dinner. The Epic Sana Resort is another luxury option overlooking the eastern end of the beach.”
This balance between nature and tourism continues to be one of the Algarve’s strengths.
A recognition that continues to weigh
To create this ranking, Tripadvisor analyzed beaches with a high number of excellent reviews over 12 months. Even with new lists emerging, the prominence of Praia da Falésia continues to be a strong argument in promoting the Algarve at an international level.
In a context where destinations increasingly compete for travelers’ attention, this type of recognition keeps Portugal on the radar, and helps explain why it continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
