The 2026 edition of Passion of the Christ in New Jerusalem celebrates the centenary of Plínio Pacheco, creator of the grand theater city located in Fazenda Nova, district of Brejo da Madre de Deus (PE). Between March 28th and April 4th, the monumental 100,000 square meter structure welcomes thousands of spectators for the traditional open-air performance. Being approximately 180 km from Recife, the experience requires rigorous prior planning in relation to transport, purchasing tickets and physical preparation to follow the play, which takes place entirely in motion.
Travel logistics and access to the theater city
Tickets for the 2026 season are sold directly on the official website (novajerusalem.com.br) and prices vary depending on the day of the week. Purchasing in advance avoids the risk of running out and long lines at the entrance. The values are divided as follows:
- Full tickets: R$180 to R$220, depending on the date chosen.
- Half-price: R$90 to R$110 (valid for students, seniors, teachers, among other audiences provided for by law).
- Physical ticket office on site: open from 8am to 7pm, exclusively on performance days.
The road journey from Recife takes on average two and a half hours. The main route is via the BR-232 highway to the city of Caruaru, followed by the BR-104 towards Campina Grande and, finally, the state road PE-145 to the Fazenda Nova district. For those who do not wish to drive, tourism agencies and shopping malls in the capital of Pernambuco offer a charter bus service in a round-trip format, with departures in the early afternoon and return shortly after the end of the performance. The theater doors open at 4pm and the show starts promptly at 6pm.
The dynamics of the show on monumental stages
Unlike conventional plays, the staging in New Jerusalem requires the audience to walk behind the actors. The scenic area is surrounded by a three-meter-high stone wall with 70 towers, housing nine stages that reproduce with historical accuracy sites such as the Temple of Jerusalem, the Forum of Pilate, Herod’s Palace and the Mount of Olives.

Schedule for the weekend in Agreste
Journey 1
The journey begins late in the morning with the journey to the Agreste of Pernambuco. A strategic stop in Caruaru allows you to visit Alto do Moura, a famous center for clay crafts immortalized by Master Vitalino, an ideal place for a lunch focused on regional cuisine. At around 3pm, start your journey to Fazenda Nova. Arriving at the gates at 4pm gives you plenty of time to explore the interior of the wall, photograph the daytime scenes and eat in the food courts before the play starts at 6pm. Journey 2
For those who choose to stay overnight in the region, the following morning can be dedicated to the traditional Caruaru Fair (if it is Saturday or Sunday), considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Brazil. Another tourism option close to Brejo da Madre de Deus is the Nilo Coelho Monumental Sculpture Park, which displays giant granite works outdoors, before taking the road back to Guararapes Airport or neighboring destinations.
Structure, food and comfort during the walk
The theater city’s terrain intersperses stretches of dirt, sand and rocks, making for a continuous three-hour walking journey. The use of closed and extremely comfortable sneakers or shoes is non-negotiable. During the day, the sun in Agreste is strong, but the climate cools quickly at dusk; Carrying a light jacket in your backpack prevents thermal discomfort caused by night winds in the open area.
The organization provides food courts with snack bars and restaurants within the walls and in the immediate surroundings. It is recommended to have light meals before the show and take a bottle of water for the walk. For people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users, the theater is mostly flat, but the presence of an escort is essential to help with movement among the crowd that moves with each change of scene.
