The official nomination of the minister for a vacancy in the (Supreme Federal Court) was by the government (PT) this Wednesday (1st). It is up to the senators to approve the nomination of the President of the Republic.
The formalization was confirmed by the Senate and also in a note by the Lula (PT) government. “The Special Secretariat for Legal Affairs of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic has just delivered the documentation to minister Jorge Messias for appointment to the position of minister of the Federal Supreme Court”, says a note released by the Civil House.
The government faced an impasse that involved the president of the Senate, (-AP), who resisted the name of Messias, who has been Minister of the Federal Attorney General’s Office since the beginning of the current administration. Alcolumbre’s initial preference was for the name of the senator from Minas Gerais, who in this fourth change from PSB.
The name of Messiah was publicly announced at the end of last year. But, faced with resistance from the president of the Senate, Lula postponed sending the official statement to have more time for political articulation.
A Messiah hearing is planned in the Senate. Messias’ confirmation depends on the approval of at least 41 of the 81 senators, in a secret vote. The government wants him to fill the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso, who left the court in October 2025.
