
The Minister of Education and Vocational Training of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Esther Niubó, will return to her duties next Tuesday, April 7, as confirmed by department sources. His return, anticipated by The Vanguardwill coincide with the meeting of the Consell Executiu that same day.
Niubó announced a temporary leave at the beginning of February after undergoing surgery. His absence coincided with the resignation of the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa. The responsibilities of the counselor were assumed by the counselor of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, who has piloted the crisis in the sector after announcing labor improvements in early March together with the minority unions CCOO and UGT. The rejection led to protests that intensified with several days of strike in public education, and which culminated in especially visible mobilizations in Barcelona and its metropolitan area. On the last day of the strike, teachers went so far as to cut off key accesses to the city, in a pressure action that showed the degree of unrest in the sector.
Government and unions tried to redirect the situation with one: Education refused to improve the signed pact while the majority of unions – Ustec, Aspepc, CGT and Intersindical – demanded to go further, reinforced by the response of the collective in the strikes. After the meeting, the social side reaffirmed its threat of new mobilizations in the third quarter of the course. Now Niubó returns with the aim of reopening bridges and reducing tension in the sector.
