Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, expanded the restriction radius for the use of drones around the home of former president Jair Bolsonaro from 100 meters to one kilometer, who has been under house arrest since last Friday. The decision was taken this Thursday after the Military Police of the Federal District pointed out that the previous limitation was insufficient given the technological capacity of the equipment.
The order responds to a request from the PM command, based on a technical analysis by the Operational Aviation Battalion (Bavop), according to which the 100 meter radius was “inadequate”. Moraes highlights that technological advances allow the capture of high-resolution images at greater distances, which would compromise the effectiveness of the protective measure.
“The technological development of remotely piloted aircraft makes it possible to capture high-resolution images and data at much greater distances, allowing detailed observation of private environments and compromising the effectiveness of the protective measure,” stated the minister.
Also according to Moraes, the previous limitation “does not adequately mitigate risks to institutional security, such as improper monitoring, the collection of sensitive information or even the preparation of illicit conduct”, which justifies the expansion of the perimeter to 1 km.
The decision maintains the previous determinations: drone overflight in the delimited area is prohibited, under penalty of civil and criminal liability. In case of non-compliance, the Military Police are authorized to destroy the equipment and arrest the operators in the act.
The restriction had initially been established after reports of irregular flights in the vicinity of the residence, in Jardim Botânico, in Brasília. According to the PM, unauthorized aircraft were identified flying over the property, which prompted an operation to locate those responsible and led to the reinforcement of security measures.
