More or less pretty artificial flowers are used in most bathrooms without windows. There is nothing wrong with that and nothing to be surprised about. It is even more interesting when you find a beautiful and thriving green living plant in such a bathroom. How is that? How can plants be grown even in such dark places?
It simply cannot be done without light
Plants absolutely need light to live, but this does not mean that the bathroom in an apartment building must remain lifeless. If you do not have a window, you must become the “ruler of the life-giving light” yourself. There are several proven ways to bring life to even the darkest corners of the home, from special lighting to the alternating method.
It is against nature to grow flowers in absolute darkness, but we humans have learned to trick these conditions. Even the least demanding flower needs at least a few hours of light energy to breathe. So how do you arrange it without windows?
Three ways to ensure plants get enough sun to live
Plant rotation method
Undemanding, yet demanding your attention is the method plant rotation. You have two identical flowers, one rests for a week in the bright living room and the other is on duty in the bathroom. After a week, you will replace them. The plant will get relief from the dry air in the bathroom, but in the room it will gather strength for another dark week.
Lighting for plants only
The second option is the choice of special lighting with a timer. Acquisition special LED grow lights (so-called grow-lights) that have the right color spectrum are expensive, so many experienced growers recommend ordinary white fluorescent lights or LED strips. It is probably not the whole spectrum that plants need, but even this kind of light is sufficient to support plants in dark rooms. It produces mainly blue light, which is sufficient for the growth of green matter.
However, various other modern and nice solutions are slowly coming to the market. This light is often not so strong that you can read under it, but it gives the plants a light spectrum that suits them. Simply plug the lighting into an outlet with a timer for 8 to 12 hours a day or for the amount of time required by the plant you decide to grow. But plants also need to sleep! Don’t shine on them 24 hours a day.
The grow station will solve everything for you
The third most sophisticated option is the acquisition of a home grow station, which it actually is smart flower potwhich creates a small, controlled environment for the plant. The basis is a container with a plant and above it an LED grow light that replaces the sun. The lamp is usually on a pole or a stand and shines exactly as long as needed. This lighting often has a built-in timer so it simulates day and night on its own. Thanks to this, herbs or houseplants can grow even in a room without windows or where there is little natural light.
The system also includes a water tank and a simple self-watering system. The plant takes moisture gradually through the wick or the capillary system, so the substrate does not dry out or be overwatered. Cultivation is also possible hydroponically.
Some stations also have a water level indicator or a place for a nutrient solution. The result is a small home “microclimate” that will provide the plant with light, moisture and stable conditions, even if the usual windowsill does not exactly want it.
What does the build and wiring look like? For example, from a post on a YouTube channel
Potten & Pannen – The stand is quite clear that even a child can handle the installation.
Selection of the most resistant plants
However, not all plants are made to stay in the bathroom, whether you move them or plant them in a smart flowerpot. Forget the flowering species and reach for the really hardy ones.
One of the most reliable candidates is zamiokulkas i.e. It has strong, glossy leaves and can handle low light well. Although it grows slowly, it is one of the least demanding indoor plants. The ordinary one also worked well climbing framewhich many refer to incorrectly as . It is adaptable, tolerates a wetter environment and will grow even when it loses its bright glow in the dark and the leaves are a solid green. It is also very durable mother-in-law’s languagewhich can handle drought, humidity and low light and often survives where other plants quickly wither. It can also be grown hydroponically surprisingly well. It can also be used well rhizome.
