French citizen executed in China for drug trafficking

Chan Thao Phoumy, a French citizen sentenced to death in 2010 for drug trafficking in China, was executed. The information was released on Saturday (April 4, 2026) by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The 62-year-old man, born in Laos, had his sentence served in Guangzhou, in southern China. The French ministry expressed “consternation” with the case in published. The exact date of the execution was not disclosed by Chinese authorities.

In the text, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared: “TheDespite the efforts of the French authorities, including attempts to obtain a humanitarian pardon for our compatriot, the Chinese authorities decided to carry out the sentence after more than 20 years of imprisonment”.

We particularly regret that Mr. Chan’s defense team was prevented from attending the final hearing, which constitutes a violation of his rights”, reported France.

China maintains capital punishment for crimes related to drug trafficking.

In a statement provided to (Agence France-Presse), China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “reCurbing drug-related crime is a shared responsibility of all countries”.
