US Army and Navy participated in rescue of pilot in Iran

The Army’s elite Delta Force and U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six were among hundreds of special operations troops and American military and intelligence personnel involved in the rescue of a U.S. Air Force colonel in Iran, according to a source briefed on the executive summary of the search and rescue operation.

The injured officer was finally rescued after two days of risky operations after his was shot down during a night mission in southwestern Iran.

The jet belonged to the 48th Fighter Wing at Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath in Suffolk, England, the source said.

Senior officials described it as one of the most challenging combat search and rescue missions due to the terrain, hostile pursuit by Iranians and post-rescue complications.
