Former mayor of Sobral and brother of the former governor of Ceará, Ivo Gomes was appointed to a position with a salary of R$52,500 at BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development). The appointment angered a wing of the PT, as Ivo even stated that it was necessary to be “careful with your wallet” in the context of a visit by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the state.
The speech was given in 2021, when Ivo was still mayor of Sobral. According to allies, his appointment at BNDES was a collaboration between the former Minister of Education, who was governor of Ceará, and senator Cid Gomes (PSB). The move removed the former mayor from the political scene and moved him to Rio de Janeiro, preventing a rapprochement with Ciro Gomes, who will run for local government against the PT.
While Ivo was being appointed to the BNDES, his other brother, Lúcio Gomes, asked for dismissal from Companhia de Docas do Ceará and must embark on Ciro Gomes’ campaign. The assessment of Camilo’s group, who left the MEC and is an alternative candidate for the government of Ceará, is that the appointment would prevent Ivo from getting closer to Ciro.
Ivo helped with Ciro Gomes’ campaign in 2022, when the former governor of Ceará ran for President of the Republic. The then mayor of Sobral even represented his brother promoted by Sheet.
Ceará has become one of Lula’s biggest problems, who needs to consolidate his favoritism in the Northeast in this election. In the state, and the PT is trying to find ways to strengthen governor Elmano de Freitas, who will seek re-election.
When contacted, Ivo told Sheet who will support Lula. “I voted for Lula in all the elections in which he was a candidate, this one will be no different,” he stated. Asked about the comment about the need to be “careful with your wallet” because of the PT member, the new BNDES employee stated that it was “an unfortunate comment”.
The BNDES informed that Ivo Gomes holds the position of department head advisor to the institution’s Presidency. The bank reported having 27 external advisors, that is, positions held by non-career professionals.
According to the bank, Ivo “will dedicate himself to the development agenda of the Northeast Region and will contribute to the development of BNDES’ social programs, especially the public security agenda.” The institution stated that he “will bring a great professional contribution to BNDES, where he will receive a salary of R$52,554.56.”
The bank says that the salary is compatible with what he received as a municipal prosecutor and also follows the current Remuneration Plan.
