Renewing a driver’s license in Portugal may have lower costs after a certain age, but the process remains subject to specific rules, including the presentation of mandatory documents in some cases. For many drivers, the main change happens after the age of 70, when the amount to be paid for revalidation is reduced by half compared to the usual cost. Still, there are other demands that must be considered before proceeding with the request.

For the light categories, the medical certificate becomes mandatory from the age of 60, being one of the main requirements at this stage. Psychological certificate in specific situations
The psychological fitness certificate is not required for most passenger drivers, but may be mandatory in particular situations. According to the same source, this requirement arises when the letter includes certain restrictions that require psychological evaluation.
In the case of drivers of heavy vehicles, the requirements are more stringent, and it is always necessary to present a medical certificate. According to gov.pt, the psychological fitness certificate becomes mandatory from the age of 50 for this group of drivers.
How to order
The renewal request can be made online, using the IMT platform, or in person at various service counters. According to the same source, online access can be done with a Citizen Card, Digital Mobile Key or portal credentials.
In the case of the medical certificate, it is sent directly by the doctor to the system, and there is no need to submit it manually. The same source states that the psychological aptitude certificate must be scanned and submitted when applying online or presented in person.
After completing the process, the new letter is sent to the address indicated by the driver during the request. According to the same source, if no one is there to receive it, the document can be collected later at the post office or at IMT services.
