US and Israel disagree on staying in war, says expert

The professor at the Naval War College, Leonardo Mattos, highlighted in an interview with WW that the United States and Israel have different objectives in relation to the current conflict in the Middle East, which could make negotiations for a ceasefire difficult.

According to Mattos, for the Israeli government led by Netanyahu, maintaining the conflict represents a question of political survival. “For Israel, it is a question of survival, considering its geographic distance to Hezbollah in Lebanon and in,” the expert explained.

The professor highlighted that Netanyahu faces parliamentary elections in October and has a legal case pending in Israeli courts. “For the current Israeli government, the longer the better in light of all these issues,” he analyzed.

Divergent interests among allies

On the other hand, the expert pointed out that the United States, under Trump’s command, is in a hurry to . “It’s not the case with Trump. Trump wants to get out of this conflict quickly. It’s been going on too long,” said Mattos, relating this urgency to factors such as inflation in the United States and the popularity of Trump himself, who will face elections in November.

Leonardo Mattos also mentioned important events on the American calendar, such as Trump’s meeting with Xi Jinping scheduled for May 14 in Beijing, reinforcing the US interest in quickly resolving the situation in the Middle East.

The expert warned that negotiations will not be simple. He mentioned that the American vice president will lead the US delegation in the talks that will take place in Pakistan, having returned to the United States to align strategies with Trump before moving on to the negotiations.

Mattos concluded that the situation is complex, since “Netanyahu will remain inside Lebanon and, logically, Iran will want Israel to stop the attacks”, making the scenario challenging for the negotiations that will begin on Saturday in Pakistan.
