Montenegro hopes that positions can be "fine-tuned" on labor law "in the coming days"

The Prime Minister said this Friday that he hoped that “in the coming days” positions could be “fine-tuned” and decisions taken in the context of social consultation regarding the labor package, and assured that the Government would know how to interpret the President of the Republic’s concerns.

“It is not worth expecting this process to be prolonged for a long time. What we can hope for, and this is what I also hope for, is that in the coming days positions can be refined and the appropriate decisions can be taken”said Luís Montenegro, when asked at the end of a conference about the decision of the UGT secretariat to reject the preliminary proposal to revise the labor law in its current form and continue negotiations.

After, in his speech from the pulpit, saying that the government would continue the effort to reach an agreement in social consultation, the Prime Minister told journalists that this will be a process that he hopes to see concluded “soon”.

“We are in a negotiation process with the social partners, we will finish it soon, then the Government will make a final decision on the proposal to be sent to parliament, and then parliament will decide, and the President of the Republic will have his intervention in the legislative procedure later on”, he said.

Faced with the position of the head of state, who during the campaign said he would not enact a proposal without UGT’s approval, Montenegro responded that the Government is aware of António José Seguro’s positions.

“We are not unaware of the positions that the President of the Republic has already expressed on this matter and, naturally, we will know how to interpret them and take them into consideration,” he said.
