The more recent national myths of the Austrian nation include those that have historically been meticulously wrong Sissi-Films with Romy Schneider, Franz Klemm’s Olympic victory in Innsbruck in 1976, the 3-2 win against the German kickers in Cordoba in 1978 or Falco’s number one in the USA Rock me Amadeus 1986. Because of the collapse of its old greatness after the Habsburg empire and then, thank God, it was not quite a thousand years old, the country today likes to rely on sporting hurray patriotism out of a feeling of inferiority. The beauty of the landscape is celebrated just as much as the permanent grace of its residents, which hopefully appears charming to tourists. A pessimism deeply inscribed in the people’s soul guides us through our lives as a guiding star.
