The mayor of São Paulo, (MDB), stated that he believes that the senator and pre-candidate (PL-RJ) “will be the next president” and can win the 2026 elections in the 1st round. The statement was given in an interview with , published this Friday (April 10, 2026).
For Nunes, the performance of the president (PT) may be affected by economic factors and recent investigations. “Lula’s rejection is huge because it is a government that has no fiscal responsibility and is leading the country into a bad economic situation,” declared.
The mayor said that the result will depend on the unification of right-wing and center-right candidates. “Flávio can win in the 1st round.”
The mayor declared support for Flávio Bolsonaro’s candidacy and the re-election of (Republicans), governor of São Paulo. “I will be there with my body and soul so that he can be re-elected.”
He also said that the MDB can adopt a position of independence nationally, but that in São Paulo it will support the PL candidate. “It is absolutely certain that Tarcísio de Freitas will continue to be our governor”, declared.
Nunes stated that the economy must be central in the electoral dispute. “Brazil currently has the 2nd highest inflation in the world, second only to Turkey. We have a Selic interest rate of almost 15% per year.”
He also criticized the federal government’s fiscal policy. “In the last twelve months, we broke a record, with 1 trillion reais in debt interest payments alone.”
Haddad e Tebet
Nunes criticized the former Finance Minister and pre-candidate for the government of São Paulo (PT).
“Haddad was mayor for 4 years and the population gave him a red card: Haddad lost re-election in the 1st round. It was a very bad government. We cannot run the risk of having the worst Finance Minister Brazil has ever had, who expelled companies to Uruguay and Paraguay, running the State of São Paulo, which is Brazil’s economic locomotive”these.
He also criticized (PSB)’s pre-candidacy for the Senate in São Paulo at Lula’s request. The former Minister of Planning is from Mato Grosso do Sul. “I found it very strange for a woman of that caliber to say that she has to submit to a situation like that”, these.
“I think it’s very bad. São Paulo needs a senator who is from the state, who is committed to the state. Her movement is even a form of disrespect towards the people of Mato Grosso do Sul. As Minister of Planning, do you know what she helped in São Paulo? Nothing, ever. How is it that a person who has never helped the state wants to come here and take the votes? Obviously, the population of São Paulo”, he added.
Master and INSS Cases
The mayor cited investigations involving Banco Master and INSS as topics that could influence the election. “These issues will be brought to the attention of the population.”
Regarding the Federal Supreme Court, he stated that the minister’s performance André Mendonça can help restore the Court’s credibility. “It brings hope that the country’s highest court will reestablish credibility,” declared.
